About OnionPress

The Mission

OnionPress exists because we believe everyone should be able to publish on the web without asking permission from a platform, a hosting company, or a government.

Your computer becomes a web server. Your blog gets a permanent address on the Tor network that no one can take away. The Wayback Machine archives everything so your words survive even when your laptop is closed. WordPress gives you the full power of the world’s most popular publishing platform.

No monthly fees. No terms of service. No algorithm deciding who sees your writing. Just you, your words, and the open web.

Locking the Web Open

“I want a web that is more like what we had at the beginning — decentralized, under the control of individual users.”
— Brewster Kahle, “Locking the Web Open”, 2015

OnionPress is part of a larger vision for a decentralized web — one where individuals own their platforms, their data, and their addresses. The early web was like this: anyone could run a server, anyone could publish. Over time, the web centralized into a handful of platforms that control what billions of people can say and see.

We’re building tools to reverse that. OnionPress is one of those tools.

Built With

WordPress — The world’s most popular content management system, powering over 40% of websites. Full themes, plugins, and a familiar dashboard.

Tor — The privacy network that protects millions of users. OnionPress uses Tor’s onion service feature for permanent, uncensorable addresses. torproject.org

Wayback Machine — The Internet Archive’s web archive, preserving the web since 1996. OnionPress sites are automatically archived and replayed when offline. web.archive.org

Docker — Containerization keeps everything sandboxed and secure on your machine.

Open Source

OnionPress is free and open source under the AGPL 3 license. You can read every line of code, modify it, and share it.
